Have been sitting at home working on different ideas, but I've also been busy with the following:
Down to KING EDWARDS SCHOOL FOR BOYS in Edgbaston to the CAMPAIGN FOR THE BOOK Conference, set up by the redoubtable author & speaker ALAN GIBBONS to challenge the way that public libraries, school libraries and the school library service are being cut in far too many areas. Read all about it on Alan's blog, and also on Bookwitch's blog.
On Tuesday I was up at the new THORNABY CENTRAL LIBRARY near Stockton on Tees, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Public Lending Rights. Went with another children's author HILARY ROBINSON, and we enjoyed meeting some of the brilliant people who make PLR happen.
In case you don't know about PLR, each time a book is borrowed from a library, a very small amount is paid to the author and any illustrator. As books are kept in libraries for far longer than they stay on bookshop shelves, books are available for much longer, and the money helps to support many authors. But it's not only the cash. PLR shows the author their books have been, and are being read. A wonderful feeling! And, as TRACEY CHEVALIER said at the PLR party, "Libraries are about readership not ownership".
Then a busy weekend. Over to CRAYKE PRIMARY SCHOOL, where I was honoured to be opening both the School Gala Day and the much-needed school extension. I came away with a most beautiful bouquet of cottage garden flowers, and - so very excitingly - the knowledge that my name alog with the word "Author" is up there on a brass plaque on the school wall. Thank you so much to everyone there, and many congratulations on all the years of effort and fund-raising that helped to build the new rooms and classrooms. Crayke P.S. is certainly a true community school!
Crayke School also has a lovely School Garden & an intriguing Sculpture Park, which I thought about today when I was at RHS HARLOW CARR for their STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL, telling stories with a strawberry theme, and eating a few too. Another fun day!
Just as well, because tomorrow brings some busy days of paperwork, accounts and writing. An early night, methinks! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
