A TRIP both TO and AT LONG ROW SCHOOL!
Well, what a day! Down to Long Row Primary School in Belper yesterday. An early start, traffic not so bad, arrived at school, was escorted by two helpful girls to the office when IT happened.
I was being nosy, as all authors are, admiring all the art work and sculptures and hangings, and DID NOT SEE THE STEP! So a huge CRASH! and I was flat on the floor. My lovely looks (hem, hem) saved only by the bounciness of my story basket - boing, boing, boing! Luckily my two helpers were not crushed by me and my books. Can you imagine the headlines "AUTHOR CRUSHES CHILDREN FLAT!PENNY PUTS PUPILS IN PERIL!" The shame. . .! A definitely scarlet-faced moment!
Anyway, the day was saved by the kindness of the staff, who helped me - especially in the ouchiness of the afternoon - by tea and loans of painkillers for my by-then aching arm, and more tea, and tea again, and kit-kat bars. I just hope I spoke sense for the Year 1&2s and the Year 5&6 children for the last two sessions. But it was a very enjoyable day in between, so many thanks to everyone at Longrow.
PS. Not all authors do this sort of falling-about-the-place type of thing!
PPS. A specially huge THANK YOU to all the children in Mrs Irvine's class, who had made me some lovely cards. I've enjoyed looking at them all today! FANQU!
